Using Engineered Systems in Building a Private Cloud for Business

Engineered systems give you a long list of technologies that allow you to do more with cloud computing.

Why should you use engineered systems for your cloud strategy? Because engineered systems allow you to be more agile and leaner, and it gives you the chance to see and realize benefits a whole lot faster.

With more and more businesses seriously eyeing getting on the cloud, it is not a surprise that we are seeing cloud strategies getting incorporated into business plans all over the world. But what most businesses do not know is that an engineered system might help them get on the cloud faster and easier.

How engineered systems help

Current cloud services are priced according to consumption. You pay a particular rate per hour and that one price would include network, compute and storage among other variables. If you use engineered systems, you will have greater visibility and agility over all IT processes, giving you a better way to monitor consumption and handle chargeback. You also deal with fewer components, while having more compute density and consolidation, which in turn allows you to run more loads in parallel. And most importantly, you can expect lower costs for your cloud computing platform from having to deal with less engineering and fewer boxes, while also having greater control.

Engineered systems give you a long list of technologies that allow you to do more with cloud computing. This helps you:

  • Be more agile. You do not have to build your systems anymore, and instead gets a system that is already configured, set up and ready to run.
  • Have a lean IT. Dealing with fewer boxes allows you to divert the money and time saved to other things, such as innovation and change.
  • Work better with the business side of things. Because you no longer have to administer your engineered systems, you would be able to devote more time aligning IT processes with business rules.

You also get to utilize your hardware more, while having a centralized storage and database. Plus you get a handle on governance by being able to consider the needs of the enterprise with that of IT. Using Oracle Cloud, you have the tools to monitor and ensure that your system is low cost and secure, plus it also gives end users the computing resources they need.

Engineered Systems vs. Commodity IT

To prove our point, it would be better to further quantify the benefits of using an engineered system when building a private cloud for your business.

The most important question to answer in this process is to figure out whether to use an engineered system or stick to commodity IT. According to Muneeb Ahsan, IT Strategy and Insight director and EMEA Cloud Strategy Practice Lead at Oracle, a customer that uses commodity IT that comprises of thirty HP DL580-G7s with 150 terabytes of SAN data will get a 97 per cent return on investment in around two years. But using Oracle Exadata, you can get a 577 per cent return on investment within just one year. In short, you get more returns on your investment at a far shorter time with Oracle Exadata.
