MySQL Classic Edition: For your business’ read-intensive applications

MySQL Classic Edition is only available to ISVs, OEMs and VARs to license as an embedded database.

MySQL is considered to be the most popular open source database in the world, a platform that you can rely on if you need high performance, scalable and reliable databases.  Original equipment manufacturers, independent software vendors and value added resellers that offer read-intensive applications would find MySQL Classic Edition as the perfect embedded database for them.  The MySQL Classic Edition is exclusively available to OEMs, VARs and ISVs so that these companies can license it as an embedded database.

Benefits of using MySQL Classic Edition

There are several advantages to offering MySQL Classic Edition to your customers.

  1. First there is the cost savings.  When you use MySQL Classic Edition, you can minimize the total cost of ownership for your database.
  1. It is also very easy to use.  MySQL Classic Edition has a 15-minute rule when it comes to usage, meaning you can download and install everything in just 15 minutes.
  1. You would also love how easy it is to administer MySQL Classic Edition.  This way, you can manage more servers or let your database administrators attend to other more pressing tasks.
  1. You can get MySQL Classic Edition for just about every major platform you have.  It does not matter if you are using Mac, Unix, Windows or Linux.  You will be able to use MySQL Classic Edition. This gives you utmost flexibility in deployment and development.
  1. Additionally, if you need more performance and capabilities from your database, you could easily upgrade to other MySQL editions such as MySQL Enterprise Edition, MySQL Cluster Carrier Grade Edition or MySQL Standard Edition.  While the MySQL Classic Edition has the features that are common to all editions, such as the MySQL Database Server, the MySQL Connectors, MySQL Replication, plus premiere support from Oracle, there are some features that you cannot find in MySQL Classic Edition.  For example, compared to the Standard Edition, MySQL Classic Edition does not have MySQL Workbench.  Also, MySQL Classic Edition uses only the MyISAM storage engine, while the Standard Editions uses both MyISAM and InnoDB.

If you are just going to offer an embedded database for your read intensive applications, then MySQL Classic Edition should be a good choice.  No sense paying more for features and functionalities that you would not be using anyway.  However, if you find that you need something else or something more in the future as you grow, then as we have indicated, it is very easy to move up to MySQL Standard Edition, and even Enterprise Edition or Cluster Carrier Grade Edition.
