- Storage tiering is when you deploy your data on different tiers or levels of storage. Less accessed data is place on slower and more affordable storage. You can still access your data but it will be slower, but since this is data that is seldom used, it does not matter too much.
- Compression tiering, on the other hand, is when you compress the data. This way you are keeping a copy of the data (as opposed to deleting it) but it is not accessible.
So how does the Heat Map and Automatic Data Optimization work with storage tiering and compression tiering? Here’s how. The Heat Map can tell you what types of data are not being accessed, so you could tell the system to move it to lower cost storage. At the same time, it can help you determine which types of data are being used more frequently, so that you could transfer it to a more efficient storage.
With these alone, you could see how Oracle helps you manage even large amounts of data. Ultimately, being able to move large amounts of data automatically will help you improve your database and application’s performance.
