Oracle Database 18c is now directly integrated with Microsoft Active Directory Services.

A lot of companies are now on the cloud or are seriously considering it. So is it any surprise that we are finding more and more applications for different cloud service models? One of the up and coming models is the database as a service (DBaaS), which allows users to have database environments by selecting from a predefined service menu via a self-service provisioning system.

Because of database as a service, organizations are more agile and the deployment of database services is a lot faster. It is possible for you to use database as a service for a single project. You get the resources you need for that project’s database and then you can use that same resource for something else when the project is over. Not only that, you can have accurate chargebacks and better tracking of your computing costs.

As for businesses, they can also benefit from using database as a service because it can simplify IT infrastructures. This means that different departments and multiple users would be able to use the same software and hardware infrastructure to get the database that they need, in minutes instead of the previous days and weeks waiting time to get a database in commission.

The simpler IT infrastructure is what gives you the ability to become more agile and operate your IT with lower costs and risks.

You get more agility because a database as a service infrastructure allows for self-service and is built for elasticity.

You get lower costs because you are basically sharing the resources that you already have, no more buying hardware and software each time you need a database. Plus you can automate tasks and meter more effectively.

Lower risks come from tighter security, greater control and higher availability times that you can get from a database as service platform.

A database as a service is best suited for dev/test projects, wherein you can setup and decommission databases when you need it, even without IT assistance.

It would be easy to sell the idea of adopting database as a service to your IT departments because they can easily see how it could make your organization more agile, how it could save costs, and how it could cut risks. Meanwhile, management will be swayed by the fact that such a system would be considered as an operational expense, meaning that it will not need big investments upfront. It can also help transform your IT department into a revenue generator because you can charge back the costs of the database services to the appropriate users.

If you are planning to get started with database as a service, then you should conduct a detailed capacity planning so that you can be sure that you can adhere to the service level agreements and meet user requirements with your new cloud platform. You also need to select the right technology to make it easier for you to get the most out of your database as a service environment.
