Enterprises nowadays are receiving large amounts of data, but these are not really stored and managed effectively in order to be useful.
The rapidly growing data is becoming a problem in terms of storage. True, storage is getting cheaper and cheaper by the minute, but it is not enough to keep up with the rapidly increasing amount of data that enterprises have to store.
Information Lifecycle Management to the Rescue
Fortunately, information lifecycle management is here to help you solve that. Depending on your business requirements and needs, information lifecycle management can help you store data using different compression and storage tiers. And Oracle recently added two information lifecycle management features into the package.
- First, you have the Heat Map. The Heat Map will track how your data is being accessed. It will help you determine what data at the segment and row levels are going to be acted upon. Then you have Automatic Data Optimization.
- Automatic Data Optimization allows you to automatically compress and move data. You just set up policies using the information you get from Heat Map.
Before we get into examples of how these two are used to help you manage and optimize data, let us first explain compression tiering and storage tiering.
- Storage tiering is when you deploy your data on different tiers or levels of storage. Less accessed data is place on slower and more affordable storage. You can still access your data but it will be slower, but since this is data that is seldom used, it does not matter too much.
- Compression tiering, on the other hand, is when you compress the data. This way you are keeping a copy of the data (as opposed to deleting it) but it is not accessible.
So how does the Heat Map and Automatic Data Optimization work with storage tiering and compression tiering? Here’s how. The Heat Map can tell you what types of data are not being accessed, so you could tell the system to move it to lower cost storage. At the same time, it can help you determine which types of data are being used more frequently, so that you could transfer it to a more efficient storage.
With these alone, you could see how Oracle helps you manage even large amounts of data. Ultimately, being able to move large amounts of data automatically will help you improve your database and application’s performance.
