The 2014 Oracle OpenWorld participants.

Oracle OpenWorld is a yearly event organized by Oracle Corp. and is geared towards the decision-makers, IT managers and end users, among other potential and current customers.  The event basically tells the public about news and product features from the company.

Oracle OpenWorld is held in three different venues: San Francisco, California; Shanghai, China; and Sao Paulo, Brazil.  Each of these venues holds the event over five days, usually starting on a Sunday and running through a Thursday.

What are the things you’ll learn

At Oracle OpenWorld, you can learn more about the company’s new products and latest technologies.  You will also learn more about Oracle’s latest acquisitions and how these businesses can benefit the company and its various software and products.

At the event, you can hear about the new functionalities and features straight from the horse’s mouth, so to speak.  You will be hearing from senior managers and product specialists talk about the new developments, sometimes even from the team that helped bring these new features into the market.  Aside from seminars and talks, you can also expect product demonstrations, exhibits and hands-on lab sessions.  Senior level executives are also at hand and they usually give the keynote addresses.  It is not far off to see Oracle CEO Larry Ellison or Oracle president Mark Hurd giving the welcome speeches.

For 2014, San Francisco’s Oracle OpenWorld will be held on September 28 to October 2 at the Moscone Center and Moscone West. The sessions will touch on:

  • Engineered Systems
  • Applications, including JD Edwards, Blue Kai, ATG Web Commerce, Endeca, Fusion Applications, CRM on Demand, Taleo, Responsys, Commerce Cloud and Primavera
  • Database, including big data, data warehousing, database development and management, in-memory and NoSQL
  • Enterprise Manager, including applications management, framework and best practices, middleware management and private cloud management
  • Middleware, including application servers, business analytics, data integration, Oracle Application Development Framework and enterprise mobility
  • MySQL
  • Oracle Cloud Solutions

There are also tracks that are based on the industries you work in, including the public sector, life sciences, utilities, media, automotive, professional services, retail and communications.  In any case, there are around 1,800 sessions planned for you, so it would make sense to know in advance which sessions you should go to.

What to expect at the 2014 Oracle OpenWorld

There are some areas that will be heavily focused on at Oracle OpenWorld this year.

For one, we can expect to hear more about Oracle Database 12c and its in-memory functionalities, and there are a lot of sessions that you can attend if you want to really get into the nitty-gritty of in-memory.  Hopefully, the training and education for Oracle Database 12c could help bring wider adoption for the said platform.

You would also see quite a lot of sessions that would help you realize how beneficial the company’s engineered systems have been using real world examples.  You can hear from Oracle Exadata, Exalogic and Exalytic customers and learn how they have deployed these engineered systems in their respective enterprises.

It is also expected that there will be a heavy focus on public cloud, especially Oracle’s platform as a service (PaaS) and infrastructure as a service (IaaS) offerings.  You will also learn more about big data management, the Big Data Appliance, NoSQL database and the new Big Data SQL.

Fusion applications and MySQL are also expected to be widely discussed this year.
