Database as a Service: Making DBA’s job easier

Database administrators often dread the thought of provisioning new databases.

Database administrators often dread the thought of provisioning new databases. This is because this process is usually drudging and time-consuming. On top of his or her daily tasks that may include some pressing challenges, a database administrator would need to find the time to create and provision the new databases.

Database as a service provides a way to make every database administrator’s lives a little bit easier by allowing you to automate creating new databases, refreshing test environments and other similar tasks. You can do this via database as a service using Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c and cloud services. A database administrator would have the ability to set up storage pools that he or she could use for profiles and templates that a user can use. So instead of building everything from scratch, all the database administrator has to do is come up with templates and procedures and a user can correctly provision a database for himself or herself. In addition, there would be a need for a portal that would give members access to make such requests.

The user would only have to follow the procedures and request a database based on a catalog of functionalities and then have the database they need in a jiffy. All this delivered without the database administrator doing anything.

And it is very easy. For instance, to create a database clone, you would need a licensed Cloud Services Management Pack and install the plug in to your Oracle Enterprise Manager. There are several steps to go through and components to include, such as:

  • Profiles, which allow you to take an existing database or schema that you could copy for your template.
  • Templates, which are designed to give the instructions that the services must meet.
  • Users, privileges and roles, which allow you to specify who can request a database, and what each access level or user could do.

Once you already have these in place, you can use the service catalog. The user would be able to log into the Database Cloud Service Portal then choose from any one of the offerings in the service catalog. It could be to create a new database, clone an existing database, and other options that are available to you.

After that, you would need to go through a wizard, enter the necessary data in the fields that you need to answer, including the database name, and the security requirements. Just go through the wizard and you can create your own database clone by yourself.

You can also have chargebacks as well. That is the process of holding departments for the use of IT resources. That means that you can monitor which department are using IT resources and be charged back to their budgets for these usage.

You have to admit that being able to automate several database provisioning tasks such as multi-tenant creation, snap clone and schema refreshes is a godsend. This is especially true for database administrators who have to perform these tedious tasks. IT would be seen as a service provider, rather than a stumbling block for a new project’s start, and your DBA gets to attend to more important things.
