Moving from MySQL to Oracle

Oracle is one of the top and largest tech companies in the world.

Oracle Corp. is the world’s biggest software maker and is arguably a leader in the enterprise software space.  When it comes to databases, Oracle puts its full commitment behind Oracle Database and comes up with new features for it.

Compared to MySQL, Oracle is much more versatile.  It also offers more power if you use your database a lot.  Nevertheless, do not think that Oracle Database and MySQL cannot be complementary.  The truth is each database system is ideal for different uses.

Still, with tech blogs constantly pitting the two against one another, you might be curious.  For example, Alex Williams at TechCrunch wrote that Oracle is barring the growing use of MySQL, even accusing it of “killing” MySQL

Nevertheless, if you are currently using a MySQL database, consider migrating to Oracle for the following reasons:

1.       Oracle databases have a lot of metadata information that enables you to tune it more.

2.       It is more scalable.

3.       More XML functionality as well as analytical SQL functions.

4.       Better at handling backups.

5.       Better at data warehousing with materialized views, analytical functions, sort-merge joins, among others.

6.       It allows for stored procedures that make it more accessible.

7.       The use of Oracle Enterprise Manager, which makes it easier to manage and monitor an entire Oracle system.

8.       Mirroring and striping capability is available when you use Automatic Storage Management.

9.       More recovery options with its Flashback technology.

10.   Much easier to manage with automatic management tools such as Automatic Workload Repository and Automatic Database Diagnostic Management, among others.

11.   Better GIS functions.
