A cloud app is a program that is hosted in the cloud, possessing characteristics of both desktop and web applications.

Cloud computing has become an integral part of many organizations. But what do the solution architects, software developers and business users need to understand about this technical topic?

This article aims to provide you a better understanding of some important enterprise cloud computing application terms.

Cloud computing application (cloud app)

A cloud app is a program that is hosted in the cloud, possessing characteristics of both desktop and web applications. Most cloud apps can be easily accessed since it works online and offline. It can also be updated anytime, anywhere.

Cloud Application Performance Management

Cloud APM or CAPM upholds the application’s performance running in hybrid and private cloud environments. Acting as the champion for organizations that are using cloud applications, CAPM monitors and manages the applications and the resources they are running on to make sure everything work properly.

CAPM tools help the organizations identify a poor user experience and quickly resolve any issues. Some tools even have the capability to alert IT administrators where a problem may potentially arise, or the ability to automate a solution for an ongoing issue.

Virtual Private Cloud

A virtual private cloud is a private cloud existing in a service provider’s public cloud environment. It has the capability to securely transfer data between a private enterprise and a public cloud service provider. This task is made possible through strict application of security policies such as tunneling, encryption, private IP address, and allocation of a unique VLAN to each customer.

Application Migration

Application migration refers to the process when an application is transferred from one environment to another. The migration is either from on-premise server to the cloud or from one cloud to another cloud environment.

Migrating applications can be a daunting task because hosting platforms have their own unique characteristics. Some factors that can affect the migration include the different architecture, management tools, operating systems, and storage system in the environment where the applications were deployed. In addition, not all apps were designed to be portable.

Cloud Application Management for Platforms

CAMP plays an important role in improving cloud’s interoperability as well as simplifying the management of its apps. Its primary objective is to define the program interfaces and the items offered by platform as a service (PaaS) cloud provider.

The CAMP specification is submitted to the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS). The group creates a standard program interface that makes it easier for many enterprises to work in several cloud environments.
